House Majority Forward Releases New Research on Elon Musk
February 6, 2025
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Forward is releasing new research revealing growing concerns among registered voters over Elon Musk and concerns with billionaires like Musk creating policy that benefits themselves at the expense of American taxpayers.
According to HMF’s latest polling (Impact Research, 1/19 – 1/25, 1000 Registered Voters):
- Musk holds a decidedly negative image among voters, with an overall unfavorable rating of -9 (42% favorable / 51% unfavorable).
- His approval numbers show a similar trend, with a -8 net approval rating (43% approve / 51% disapprove).
- Driven by particularly high “very unfavorable” (41% very unfavorable / 23% very favorable) and “strongly disapprove” (43% strongly disapprove / 25% strongly approve) figures, the data underscores an intense level of disdain that registered voters for Musk.
- When asked about the creation of a government of the rich for the rich by appointing up to nine different billionaires to the administration, a commanding 70% of voters opposed, with only 19% in support.
The data also highlights mounting concern over Musk’s alignment with policies targeting Social Security and other retirement benefits in order to pay for tax cuts that benefit the wealthy in the administration. While not opposed to the concept of DOGE initially, registered voters fear DOGE may endanger the programs working families and seniors rely on for the purpose of enriching members of the Trump administration. These participants voiced strong opposition to gutting Social Security benefits, raising the retirement age, and cutting other government-sponsored retirement benefits.
Messaging Guidance: On Elon Musk, it is important to focus on how his conflicts of interest as head of DOGE could lead to cuts to Medicare and Social Security and leave the interests of the middle class behind. While participants laud Musk’s business acumen and aren’t opposed to the ideals of DOGE, Musk’s relationship with Trump – who they view as inherently pro-big business – make it feasible to them that the cuts that DOGE would make could include programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. While we shouldn’t chide Musk, Trump, and others for being rich, audiences should know that the programs working families and seniors rely on are in danger so those in the administration can get rich.
