GOP Default Plan Even More Unpopular In NY-17 After House Majority Forward Ad Buy
April 17, 2023
New polling comes after HMF’s digital and billboard campaign urging House Republicans to reject extreme cuts to Social Security and Medicare
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Forward released the results of its survey of NY-17 constituents, looking at the House Republican default plan and Rep. Mike Lawler’s vote for Speaker McCarthy.
The results come after House Majority Forward’s February launch of a six-figure digital and billboard campaign in congressional districts across the country, highlighting how House Republicans are helping hold our economy hostage and urging them to reject extreme cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
House Majority Forward’s survey saw increased disapproval for the new majority’s leadership and agenda after a six-figure digital and billboard campaign in NY-17:
- The Republican plan to hold the economy hostage to cut Social Security and Medicare went from a 68% disapproval to a 75% disapproval.
- Rep. Mike Lawler’s vote for Speaker McCarthy’s House Rules package became 13% less favorable than it was in February – from net -38 to -51.
- 31% of voters said they saw House Majority Forward’s ad that focused on Medicare and Social Security, and Rep. Mike Lawler’s vote for Speaker McCarthy’s House Rules package that would make it easier to hold the economy hostage.

“The new majority in Congress has not even hit the 100 day mark, and their plans to hold the economy hostage in order to destroy Social Security and Medicare is already extremely unpopular in New York’s 17th congressional district,” said House Majority Forward Executive Director Abby Curran Horrell. “Americans don’t negotiate with hostage takers, and they must make their voices loud and clear to Rep. Mike Lawler and the new majority – don’t destroy Social Security and Medicare.”
